Majority of Atlanta Businesses Concerned About Wireless Security Threats; 79 Percent Have Installed Protective Software
AT&T has announced that one-third (32 percent) of small businesses in the U.S. are unconcerned about wireless data security, and one in six (17 percent) small businesses that use wireless technology has taken no precautions against wireless threats, according to a survey conducted by AT&T.
But in Atlanta, wireless security is top of mind. Sixty-three percent of Atlanta business owners are concerned about wireless data security for their businesses, and 79 percent have already installed software, such as spam filters or anti-virus protection, to keep their businesses safe from wireless security threats. Nationally, less than three-quarters (73 percent) of small businesses that use wireless technology have installed
software, such as spam filters or anti-virus protection.
Even with wireless security as a major concern in Atlanta, less than one-fourth (23 percent) of businesses surveyed actually have an employee who handles wireless security as part of his or her job, and only 15 percent of businesses have hired an outside consultant to handle security. Atlanta businesses were the least likely among cities surveyed to hire an outside consultant or company, with the national average at 23 percent.

The majority of internet searches conducted around the world are through the popular search engine Google, according to newly released figures from comScore.
Every minute there are approximately 1.4 million internet searches, research from comScore discovered, 60 percent of which are through Google. Yahoo! had the second most searches, followed by the Chinese search engine Baidu. Microsoft and NHN were third and fourth place respectively.
Bob Ivins, the vice president of international markets at comScore, said: "Seeing Asian search engines like China's Baidu.com and South Korea's NHN ranked alongside Google and Yahoo underscores the fact that search has become a truly global phenomenon. "The continued development of search in international markets will undoubtedly present compelling opportunities for savvy marketers on a global scale." Asia Pacific was the region with the most searches, followed by Europe, while the Middle East - Africa region has the fewest searches.
At least four percent of internet crime was hosted by sites controlled by companies belonging to the Fortune 100, according to the security company Symantec.
In its latest Internet Security Threat Report, Symantec stated that hackers habitually launch malware and spam from sites belonging to these large companies. Cyber criminals also use other sites such as social networking sites to launch their malicious code. "Social networking websites are particularly valuable to attackers since they provide access to a large number of people, many of whom trust the site and its security.
"These websites can also expose a lot of confidential user information that can then be used in attempts to conduct identity theft." Such information can also be used for online fraud or to access other sites, added the report. The report also stated that lately cyber crime is becoming less about creating chaos and more about making large amounts of money. The US Consulate General in St Petersburg has been hit by a hacking attack, according to the software security firm Sophos.
Web pages belonging to the consulate were compromised in the attack, it was reported, though they have since been cleaned up. Last week cyber criminals launched a massive and sustained attack against web pages and ended up compromising many that were based in Russia. Fraser Howard, principal virus researcher at SophosLabs, said: "This latest attack highlights the fact that no organization is immune from infection, and that no matter what the size of the company, it must defend its web pages fully to avoid being stung.
"The hackers have reeled in a big fish on this occasion and will no doubt be very pleased with their catch of the day."
Meanwhile, police in Germany have rounded up a phishing gang after an investigation lasting 16 months.

Search Results Can Be Risky
The results of Internet searches are exposing users to malware, according to a recent report from the software security company McAfee.
At least four percent of all search results could lead users to websites that could download malware, the study found. However, the study also found that the number of such results with malware fell one percent on last year's results.
Most likely to contain websites with malware are the sponsored search results purchased by their owners which appear at the top of a page. The author of the study, Ben Edelman, told vnunet.com: "The search engines could do more. "These advertisers rely completely on search engines, so the search engines are uniquely positioned to kill these businesses."
In the study, Mr. Edelman analyzed the initial 50 results from 2,300 of the most popular keywords on Yahoo! Google, AOL, MSN and Ask.com. Meanwhile, levels of malware have climbed over the last year at a greater rate than in the years before, a recent report has found. In their most recent report, IBM's Internet security systems researchers detected over 7,200 weaknesses, most of which could be exploited by attackers.
Spyware programs are sometimes installed as Trojan horses of one sort or another. They differ in that their creators present themselves openly as businesses, for instance by selling advertising space on the pop-ups created by the malware, states Mark Weibel EVP of Marketing for Broadband National Inc who operates the industries leading comparative shopping website for digital products and services. “Most such programs present the user with an end-user license agreement which purportedly protects the creator from prosecution under computer contaminant laws. However, spyware EULAs have not yet been upheld in court.”

A monitored home security system is the best solution for keeping your property or business secure and more importantly, keeping your family safe. Now monitored home security is affordable for every American family and the security system options are also flexible.
With today's changing telecommunications technologies, there are many people who are using VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or opting to rely solely on their cell phone. Many companies now recognize the need for flexible home security monitoring solutions and offer both broadband monitoring services or standard monitoring service for your security system.
Standard Monitoring Service
Most security system packages include a standard talking command station that uses your landline telephone connection to communicate with a monitoring facility. Anytime the security system is triggered, the command station sends a signal through the landline phone to a monitoring facility and notifies us about a problem in your home. Depending on the nature of the problem, the monitoring facility will respond to your alarm and dispatch the emergency authorities to your home if necessary.
Broadband Internet Monitored Security
There are security systems that offer broadband monitoring services with their home security system. Now you can connect your security system directly into an available port on your modem or router to provide your home and family with protection 24 hours, 7 days a week.
With a Broadband connection, anytime an alarm is triggered, your security system sends the signal through your broadband Internet connection and notifies a monitoring facility or you via the Internet of the problem at your house. This broadband monitoring service provides your security system with a much faster connection to the monitoring facility and is capable of notifying them of a problem at least four times faster than a traditional telephone connection.
There are security systems available that provide you with flexible equipment packages so that you can customize a security system that meets your specific needs. To help detect burglars and intruders, wireless sensors that are part of any security system package, are placed on the doors and windows as well as wireless motion detectors that are used inside the home. Also, many security system packages some offer a talking command station, which receives the signals from the wireless devices and sounds the 100dB interior siren.
With a 24/7 alarm monitoring service, the talking command station then attempts to notify you or the monitoring facility about the problem in your home by sending the signals either through your landline telephone or broadband Internet connection. The monitoring facility will allow you enough time to cancel the alarm from your home by entering the correct 4-digit code.
If the code is not entered on the security system, it will attempt to contact your home and ask for your correct password to verify whether it is a false alarm or a real emergency. If the correct password is not received on the first attempt to call your home, then the monitoring facility will immediately attempt to dispatch the appropriate emergency authorities to your home.
At that point, it would then attempt to call your emergency contact numbers to notify you, your family, and any friends or neighbors on the list about the problem at your home.
Many wireless home security systems offer all the components to meet your security needs. Different packages can be designed to meet just about anyone’s security needs. However, there may be times when you’ll need additional equipment, below are just some of the components available:
• Door/Window Sensor- Wireless door and window sensors cover your most vulnerable perimeter openings. When an intruder opens that door or window, your siren will activate and the monitoring station will be notified immediately.
• Motion Detector- Placed in the main body or walkway of the home, it detects movement in secured areas when the wireless home security system is armed.
• Talking Wireless Keypad- Provides remote control access to your wireless home security system from anywhere in the home. It allows for convenient system control plus voice feedback and system status.
• Keychain Remote Control- Follows you wherever you go. The keychain remotes allow you to arm and disarm the wireless home security system and send a panic signal from anywhere inside your home. Enjoy turning off your system as you pull into the driveway. Notify authorities at the push of a button.
• Glass Break Detector- Placed in any room of the house to provide protection in that room in case a burglar breaks a glass window or door.
• Temperature Sensor- Alerts you via the Internet or a monitoring station when the temperature in your home drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Perfect for homes located in a cold climate.
• Flood Sensor- Placed in the basement or any area in the home at risk for flooding. Provides notice of early stages of a flooding problem to help avoid costly damage. Special order item shipped separately from your wireless home security system, please allow extra time to arrive.
• Medical Panic Pendant- Worn around the neck as a necklace or on the waist like a pager. Can be used by anyone who wants a panic button in case of medical emergencies that may occur in the home.
• Overhead Garage Door Sensor/Kit- Requires a special overhead door kit that includes a customized standard sensor with an accessory attached that allows the sensor to work for you overhead door. Everything you need to protect one overhead door is included in the kit.
